STAMFORD - Stamford officials announced a new program Wednesday to keep pedestrians safe.

Mayor David Martin and the Stamford Police Department held a news conference to discuss Stamford Street Smart.

The new campaign aims to make the city safer after a record number of pedestrian deaths.

The city will be adding new traffic signs, and police officers will be ticketing distracted drivers and jaywalkers.

Officials say they are encouraging walkers and bikers to stay off their phones when on the roads and to stay alert at crosswalks.

In addition to the new campaign, a federal grant will enable police to stop more distracted drivers. More than 40 drivers were already stopped Wednesday morning.

Mayor Martin says more information and initiatives will be announced in the future, including a live social media chat.
