Stamford mayor's son connected to failed drug heist

DARIEN - Police have determined a reported home invasion in Darien Tuesday morning was actually a failed drug heist that involved Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy?s son, Ben Malloy.

According to police, the original report was an attempt to cover up a failed drug deal. Police have arrested 19-year-old Eric Sing for making a false report and attempting to sell drugs. They have also arrested 21-year-old Ben Malloy, son of Mayor Malloy, after he turned himself in early Wednesday evening.

Ben Malloy is one of three suspects wanted in connection with the incident. Police say Malloy and two other men approached Sing?s home, most likely to purchase marijuana, but instead of handing over money, the three men displayed guns and demanded the drugs. Sing never gave Malloy or the other suspects drugs, and instead called the police and reported an attempted robbery.

Police say the search for the other two suspects will continue.

The Malloy family asked for privacy, but released a statement through their attorney saying, "We have worked very hard as parents to support our son and get him the help he needs to combat his emotional illness and substance abuse. We remain deeply concerned about his well being and will continue to support him."

Malloy was charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery. His bond was set at $2,500. He's scheduled to appear in court on March 18.
