STAMFORD - Stamford officials advised the public Wednesday to conserve water during the current drought.

Ted Janikowski, Stamford's director of public safety, health and welfare, says the city has been working with the Aquarion Water Company and the state Department of Public Health to come up with recommendations for residents.

The North Stamford Reservoir supplies water to the city. Janikowski says he is aware that the reservoir is low, and he is asking residents to stop using water in excess, including through outdoor sprinkler systems and irrigation systems.

He is also asking residents to follow the water company's recommendations.

Janikowski says the city isn't issuing a mandatory ban on water yet, but that officials are monitoring the situation and will put out a warning if necessary.
