Stamford parents fill board meeting to save schools

STAMFORD - Parents packed a Stamford School Board meeting Thursday evening to confront the possibility of their children's elementary schools being closed.

Stamford is building a new magnet school that is scheduled to open in 2009. The school board feels an elementary school should be shut down when the new interdistrict one opens.

No decision has been made yet, but K.T. Murphy Elementary, Toquam Magnet and Rogers Magnet schools could be on the chopping block. Parents rallied in support of their children's schools prior to the meeting.

The mayor and school board used the meeting as a chance to discuss all the possibilities of what could happen within the district. Rogers Magnet School parents say they could support losing their school if the new program encompasses kindergarten through eighth grade, a move they've been hoping for at Rogers.
