STAMFORD - Stamford police say one man is behind bars for trying to shoot an officer at point-blank range today.

Police say at around 1:45 a.m., officer William Garay, 24, responded to calls of a man with a gun on Manhattan and Pacific streets.

Officials say Garay chased 24-year-old Marcellus Catchings, who they believe was high on PCP.

During the chase, police say Catchings took out his gun, aimed it at Garay and pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed. They say the officer tried to fire back, but missed.

They say the suspect was then tackled and arrested.

Catchings is being held on $2 million bond and is charged with attempted murder of a police officer.
