STAMFORD - One normally quiet neighborhood in Stamford is slowly returning to normal after a standoff and the possible discovery of explosive materials in a house Sunday.

Several houses on Rock Spring Road were evacuated in the morning when police say 46-year-old Kenneth Lang, of Stamford, broke into his ex-roommate's home and assaulted officers during a 90-minute standoff. Police say during the standoff, Lang threw furniture, a mirror and other items at officers.

Once Lang was in custody, police found what they thought were two pipe bombs in the home. The block was evacuated while the devices were detonated, but investigators say they didn't turn out to be pipe bombs.

However, police say officers later found materials that could be used to manufacture drugs or explosives.

"We found cooking materials, powders, things that wouldn't be used for cooking food but could be used for cooking narcotics, possibly even explosives," says Lt. Sean Cooney, of the Stamford Police Department. Some of those items have been sent to a lab for testing.

Residents are shocked about the turn of events in their neighborhood.

"This neighborhood, this street is always very quiet," says resident Daphne Downer. "I've never seen anything like this before."

Lang was arraigned on charges of third-degree burglary and assault on a police officer. He is being held on $100,000 bond and is due back in court in late August.

Off-camera, the roommate told News 12 Connecticut that he?s glad Lang is going to get the help he needs.
