STAMFORD - Stamford firefighters are trying to determine what caused a small heating unit inside a classroom at Springdale Elementary School to catch fire yesterday.

Officials say they were forced to evacuate the building around noon after heavy smoke filled the classroom and a hallway.

Firefighters say a maintenance worker was able to extinguish the blaze before crews arrived on the scene.

They say they were able to let students back inside within 20 minutes.
