STAMFORD - A group of Stamford students honored war veterans today in observance of Armed Forces Day.Today, 45 students congregated at Woodland Cemetery to plant American flags near more than 1,000 veterans' tombstones. The tradition of planting flags for fallen soldiers started in 1947 when friends of the veterans would come to Woodland Cemetery to remember those they'd lost. The flags are typically inserted on the left side of the tombstone, so they'd be behind the soldier's right shoulder if she or he was standing upright. A total of 4,000 flags were planted today in cemeteries across southwestern Connecticut to recognize deceased veterans in the area.
