FAIRFIELD - Republican lawmakers are trying to stop the state's gas tax from going up next week.
State Sen. John McKinney and Rep. Brenda Kupchick talked to drivers in Fairfield yesterday.
Their talks were part of a statewide effort supporting a petition against the tax hike.

Kupchick says it is not the increase that is the problem, it is that the government is not using the money for its intended purpose.
The 16 percent tax increase goes into effect on July 1.
