STRATFORD - Connecticut State Police are investigating after Stratford police shot an armed man who they say first shot at the officers.

It happened in the Lordship section of town by Russian Beach, in the area of Margherita Lawn and Park Boulevard.

According to state police, the incident began around 4:45 a.m. when Stratford officers responded to the beach following a report of an armed man. They say officers ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he went toward them and fired, at which time two officers shot back and struck him.

Police say the suspect is in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital. The responding officers were not hurt.

News 12 is told the officers are now on administrative duty pending the outcome of the state police investigation, as is standard procedure.

Stratford police say the initial call was an isolated incident, and that there was no threat to the public.

The names of those involved have not yet been released.
