State trooper recovering after Merritt Parkway crash

FAIRFIELD - Authorities say a state trooper is recovering after he had to be cut from his cruiser following an accident on the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield last night. Investigators say Sgt. Ben Liberatore was patrolling a construction zone along a stretch of the parkway between Trumbull and Fairfield at around 10:30 p.m. They say 68-year-old Gino Restaini, of Wilton, rear-ended Liberatore's car, pushing him into a barrier. Liberatore had to be cut out of his cruiser and was unconscious for a brief period of time, officials say. His injuries are considered non-life threatening and he's expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow. No charges have been filed against Restaini, but police say the investigation is ongoing.Authorities say it's the third serious accident in the construction zone since work there began.
