Stratford community grieves teen killed by truck

As a Stratford community mourns a teen struck and killed by a public works truck, police and school officials are still trying to piece together

STRATFORD - As a Stratford community mourns a teen struck and killed by a public works truck, police and school officials are still trying to piece together what caused the incident.

The incident took place at about 7:30 a.m. Monday on East Main Street at Wilcoxson Avenue. Police say Carlos Prada, an eighth-grader at Flood Middle School, was struck by a town public works truck. Friends and neighbors say Prada was on his way to the bus stop when he was hit. He died an hour later.

Grief counselors are on hand at Flood Middle School for students. Meanwhile, some neighbors say a crossing guard should have been present where the incident occurred.

School officials say the intersection usually has a crossing guard, but not that early. Mayor Jim Miron says it is too early to tell if having a guard there would have made a difference.

Stratford police say 42-year-old Robert Maloy, of Orange, was driving the truck that hit Prada. According to police, Maloy has worked for the DPW for five years.
