REDDING - Police say a student attending Joel Barlow High School in Redding was critically injured in a serious car crash over the weekend.

The crash happened on Cross Highway in Redding between Routes 107 and 58 Sunday night.

Police say the 16-year-old boy was riding in a car with two other young men when the 17-year-old driver lost control and the car went into the woods. The 16-year-old was ejected from the car.

They say the driver is from Easton and the other passenger is a 16-year-old from Fairfield. Police also say the boy who was ejected did not appear to be wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom McMorran says a counselor is available at the high school for students to speak with about what happened.

Dr. McMorran says the student is a rising senior who is an athlete at the school. He also says he wants the community to remember the importance of wearing seat belts.

"These car accidents give us all a moment to pause and remind our kids to wear their seat belts, follow the rules of the road and be prudent when they're driving," he says.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

Police say the other two teens involved in the crash sustained minor injuries.
