MILFORD - Jonathan Law High School opened its gym Saturday for students and grieving families to spend time with each other after the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old student.

Officials say Maren Sanchez was killed the day of the junior prom by a fellow male student. Police are investigating whether Sanchez was stabbed after turning down the suspect's invitation to the prom.

School officials say therapy dogs were on hand, as well as plenty of donated food from local restaurants. A memorial for Sanchez nearly doubled in size during the gathering.

“No one should have to go through that, especially being in high school,” said Jason Vancho, a former classmate. “Someone that young has their whole life ahead of them… Just tragic loss of life.”

Police told News 12 that they spend the day interviewing witnesses and searching the alleged killer’s home.
