MILFORD - Friends, classmates and Milford community members are mourning Maren Sanchez, the 16-year-old who was stabbed to death at school on Friday just hours before her junior prom.

The Jonathan Law High School grounds have been covered with candles, flowers and stuffed animals honoring Sanchez. On Friday night, students and community members met to pray and remember Sanchez at Walnut Beach. Many students showed up to the vigil wearing their prom dresses and tuxedos.

People visited the school all day and late into the evening on Friday night. Classmates also painted a massive rock that greets drivers passing the school with purple paint and Sanchez’s name and birthdate written on it.

Jonathan Law High School postponed its prom after the fatal stabbing this morning. The Jonathan Law Advocate says they will still be naming Maren prom queen this year, as they planned before her death.

Students say 16-year-old Sanchez was athletic, artistic and extremely well-liked. Many of her peers expressed shock that such a startling tragedy could happen in their school.

As News 12 has reported, police say a 16-year-old male student is in custody. His identity is not being released.
