HARTFORD - As Hurricane Irene continues to trek up the coast toward southwestern Connecticut, local businesses say they're preparing for the worst.

Several tent rental and party planning companies in the area say they're struggling to balance business and safety this weekend.

Tom Ginty, the CEO of Durkin's Tent & Equipment Rental, says hurricane season always lines up with the busiest time of year for his company, and the demand for additional manpower because of a hurricane raises costs.

Ginty says in order to avoid pricey damage to tents, homeowners should roll up and secure their awnings, and make sure all tents are laid down flat until the winds die down.
