STAMFORD - Thousands of people made their way to Stamford on Sunday to watch the city's annual Veterans Memorial Day Parade.

The parade kicked off at the corner of Summer and Hoyt streets. Some parade-goers say they arrived an hour before the start time to secure an ideal viewing spot.

The revelers listened to bagpipes, showed their respect by saluting and waved flags.

John Geas, a World War II veteran from Stamford, served as the parade's grand marshal.

Veterans say they hope the true meaning of Memorial Day will not be lost in people's weekend festivities.

"That's what it's all about - veterans that have sacrificed their lives for us," said James Santangelo, a veteran who served overseas.

The parade wrapped up with a ceremony at Veterans Park.
