WILTON - The Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department is working to figure out the cause of a fire that sent three people to the hospital.

The fire happened in a barn on South Church Street in Wilton Sunday night.

The Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department says the fire was so big they had to call backup from surrounding towns including Wilton, Weston and Redding.

Officials say a man and his wife live in a second-floor apartment in the barn. Firefighters say the man was treated for minor burns and the woman was treated for smoke inhalation. Both were released from the hospital on Sunday.

Officials say a Wilton firefighter was also sent to the hospital for possibly injuring a muscle in his leg.

It took crews several hours to get the flames under control, and they say there was one factor that caused it to spread so quickly.

"They had a lot of stuff in there, personal stuff they had accumulated, and that kind of helped the fire spread quickly," says Capt. Robert Napoleon.
