WESTPORT - A person was hit and killed by a train at the Saugatuck train station in Westport on Wednesday.

Investigators say the incident occurred just before 11:30 a.m. at the Westport station. The train, headed north from New York to New Haven, struck the victim just past the Saugatuck River bridge near the station. Pedestrians are allowed to walk on the bridge, but they're not allowed on the tracks.

Passengers were stranded for about an hour before workers unloaded them onto another train. Metro-North crews finally got the train moved at around 3 p.m. During the wait, other northbound trains were held at the South Norwalk station, leading to delays of almost an hour for passengers headed in both directions.

Metro-North says the victim was trespassing and is investigating how he got onto the tracks.
