Trees set to be chopped down in Greenwich cause controversy

GREENWICH - Greenwich will be holding a hearing next week to give residents a chance to speak out about the removal of more than 120 trees in order to expand the town's high school.

Blue stickers mark each of the trees set to be cut down and some are allegedly more than a century old.  Officials say the removal of the trees has already been approved by the town, but that the tree warden is holding the hearing to allow residents to voice their concerns.

A total of 121 trees are set to be cut down to make room for a new Greenwich High School auditorium, which is set to be completed in 2013.

The project is expected to cost about $29 million, and depending on the results of the hearing, the trees could begin to be removed as early as next month.
