THE BRONX - The injury prevention team at Jacobi Medical Center spent Monday trying to help senior citizens learn how to avoid falling.

Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and older, according to the CDC.

One way to reduce the risk is to wear flat shoes with thin, rubber soles, according to the team.

Another is to remain active as a senior citizen. Health experts say that muscles weaken in inactive people, increasing their risk for falling.

The team also recommends asking doctors whether medications they prescribe could have an effect on balance or stability.
