THE BRONX - Students and parents met with city officials at the Bronx High School of Science Monday to discuss ways of improving the lack of diversity in the city's eight specialized high schools.

Data released by the city's Department of Education earlier this month reveals less than four percent of all offers to the city's specialized high schools were given to black students and just under seven percent to Latino students.

Many parents shared concerns over the lack of gifted student middle school programs that would then set students up for success on the specialized high school admittance exam.

Another topic raised was changing the admissions process by increasing the number of evaluation measures beyond just students' test scores.

A new report by the Research Alliance for New York City Schools shows that increasing the evaluation measures would actually increase the lack of diversity. Their data shows the best strategy could be things like free test preparation for those beginning the application process.
