MERRICK - Police say a driver went airborne in his vehicle off the Southern State Parkway, flipped his car, tried to flee the crash scene and then assaulted a responding state trooper.

It happened in North Merrick on the westbound side of the parkway, just east of Merrick Road. The driver has been identified as 26-year-old Eventz Francois, of Amityville.

Witness Scott Castellano was among the neighbors in disbelief at the chain of events.

"I just heard a big crash from my backyard, and then I look out and there's a man hopping the fence, covered in blood in my backyard," he recalls.

It's unclear what caused the crash, but Francois' car had flipped over and ended up leaning against Castellano's garage.

State police are accusing him of driving while ability impaired by drugs. He is also facing several charges, including DWAI, resisting arrest and assault.

A responding state trooper hopped the fence, saw the suspect and tried to apprehend him. "They started wrestling in the front yard," Castellano says.

Castellano and his neighbors from across the street jumped into the scuffle to help the trooper. Neighbor Rob Lowe, his 25-year-old son and another witness all tried to keep Francois on a lawn after the trooper asked them for assistance.

"The guy was all over the place, he started swinging at the trooper and everything," Lowe says. "This trooper took a hit, and let me tell you, he's a tough guy because this guy was irrational."

Lowe and the other neighbors say they held Francois' legs and arms down until backup arrived and Francois was taken into custody.

The trooper, a veteran of the force of more than 10 years, was hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery.

Francois was also hospitalized with minor injuries.
