U.S. Embassy in Yemen latest target of Muslim protests

YEMEN - The American Embassy in Yemen has become the latest target of protesters in the Muslim world.

A crowd stormed the building this morning, tearing down the U.S. flag and burning it. Officials say the demonstrators have made it onto the grounds, but have not entered the buildings. On Sept. 11, al-Qaida's number two leader in Yemen was killed in a U.S. airstrike.

Protesters have also clashed with police outside the U.S. Embassy in Egypt. Riot police fired warning shots and tear gas at demonstrators in an attempt to keep them away from the building.

On Sept. 11, several men scaled the walls of the embassy and tore down the American flag. Egypt's president announced this morning that the country will not condone such acts.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is sending two warships to the Libyan coast following an attack on the U.S. Embassy that killed an ambassador and three diplomats.

The government is investigating the possibility that the attack was planned and not an act of random violence. The president has ordered stepped up security at our diplomatic posts around the world.

The protests have been motivated by an American-made movie that criticizes the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
