BRIDGEPORT - A veteran in Bridgeport is receiving help from the community to repair his home after it was vandalized.

Walter Bevel, a 71-year-old Army veteran, says someone stole all of the copper piping from his home. This occurred as he was returning home from the hospital in October, when his 30-year-old daughter suddenly died.

Two local nonprofit groups have stepped in to help Bevel: the Catholic Charities of Fairfield County and the Home Depot Foundation. The groups are providing the replacement plumbing and about $50,000 worth of general renovations.

Organizers say they decided to help Bevel after they learned he had faced a long series of hardships.

Bevel says the renovations on his home are scheduled to begin immediately.
