Victim in fatal Bridgeport crash was H.S. football star

Police have identified the victim in a fatal Bridgeport crash early Sunday morning as 25-year-old Darnell Cooks, a former football star at Ansonia High School.

ANSONIA - Police have identified the victim in a fatal Bridgeport crash early Sunday morning as 25-year-old Darnell Cooks, a former football star at Ansonia High School.

Police say Cooks was killed in an accident involving another car at the corner of Boston and Noble avenues. According to family and friends, he had been captain of the Ansonia High School football team his senior year and graduated in 2005.

Former coach Robert Lisi says, "We wanted other athletes and other student athletes to emulate Darnell. He was a good citizen in school; very rarely had an issue."

Officials are still investigating the accident, but say it appears that speed may have been a factor. They're not yet sure if one or both of the vehicles involved were speeding.
