STAMFORD - Volunteers were in Bridgeport Saturday afternoon to participate in a day of service to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
More than 100 volunteers gathered at Trailblazers Academy to kick off the event with music, poetry and motivational speakers.
After the kickoff, volunteers split up and headed to 11 different locations, including soup kitchens and women's shelters throughout the city.
Program Director Patricia Williams says the goal of this year's event was "make it a day on, not a day off."
Williams is encouraging people from all over the state to do some form of service on Monday as a tribute to the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr.
