MILFORD - Family and friends came together Sunday to remember a Milford student athlete who recently died from a rare, inoperable brain tumor.

A wake for Danielle Kemp, also known as Danni, was held at the Cody-White Funeral Home in Milford.

The 19-year-old was diagnosed with cancer last summer.

Kemp was playing summer baseball with the Stratford Brakettes last July when she was hit in the head by a pitch. Her suspected concussion symptoms led to a diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor.

She graduated Joseph A. Foran High School in 2015, where she was a star on the softball team and went on to play Division 1 softball for Stony Brook University.

Kemp's family says she remained brave and humorous to the end, never complaining about her situation.

The Milford community rallied around Kemp and her family, raising money for her treatment, but the support went beyond western Connecticut.

A Facebook page set to up to follow Kemp's fight against cancer featured posts from college and high school softball teams across the country.

Kemp lost her battle unexpectedly on March 10.

A fundraising effort for Kemp's treatments will now help establish scholarships for local athletes and go toward research for her type of tumor.

Kemp's funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Saint Agnes Church in Milford.
