NORWALK - Family members, friends and colleagues gathered at Collins Funeral Home in Norwalk Wednesday to remember a police officer who likely took his own life.

The first few hours of the wake were only open to family members and civil service employees who worked with Matthew Morelli. Officers from Norwalk, Stamford, Ridgefield, Weston and members of the U.S. Marine Corps all packed the funeral home to pay their respects.

The 11-year veteran was found fatally shot in a parking lot last Friday. On Tuesday, the police department announced it was likely the 38-year-old shot himself while on duty.

Those who knew Morelli say he will best be remembered for his honor and dignity, not for the way he died. Morelli will be buried with full honors Thursday.

Extra personnel was brought in to the funeral home due to the amount of people expected to attend Morelli?s wake later in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, news that the officer may have taken his own life is leaving some residents with mixed feelings. While many residents say they are saddened that a life was lost, they are a bit angry police manpower was used to search for a suspect.
