NORWALK - Western Connecticut watermen said Friday that President Donald Trump's proposed national budget could decimate the local fishing industry.

The president has proposed a 37 percent budget cut to the Environmental Protection Agency. Environmentalists say the cut could trickle down to programs that keep Long Island Sound clean and the oyster industry viable.

The Long Island Sound generates $18 billion for Connecticut's economy every year, but fishermen worry that if the water isn't clean, their businesses are likely to dry up.

If the budget goes through, watermen could actually sue the Trump administration if they don't enforce existing water quality laws. The problem is that's hard to prove without money to actually test the water.
