NORWALK - A Norwalk community is in shock after a West Rocks Middle School teacher suddenly died from a bee sting allergy.

Students and colleagues of seventh-grade teacher Carla Mortelliti say the 50-year-old woman was one of those teachers whom kids adored and stayed in touch with over the years. They say the fact that Mortelliti died from an allergic reaction to a bee sting only makes her loss more bewildering.

Doctors say most people who have a severe allergic reaction to a bee sting survive.

Dr. Mitchell Lester, of Fairfield County Allergy Asthma and Immunology, says the only way to know you're severely allergic is to have a previous allergic reaction. In which case, Lester says, you can be armed with an epinephrine shot to combat future reactions, or you can undergo treatment with venom shots to reduce your risk of reaction.
