WESTPORT - A doctor's office in Westport was evacuated Tuesday following a mercury spill that prompted a hazardous materials response.
According to officials, a blood pressure device broke at the Avery Center for Obstetrics & Gynecology and spilled mercury.
The Fairfield County Hazardous Materials Response Team monitored staff for mercury exposure, and everyone was OK. Only one patient was present at the time of the scare.
Westport Director of Health Mark Cooper called the scare a potentially serious situation that was quickly under control. He says mercury exposure can cause neurological problems.
A private contractor has undertaken the cleanup process. The contractor says it will likely be at least two days until the center can reopen, but it might take until Monday.
