WESTPORT - Twenty firefighters from Connecticut, including one from Westport, are on their way to California today to help battle a large wildfire.

Westport fire officials say Assistant Chief Michael Kronick is part of the team.

Officials say he is part of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's Interstate Fire Crew, which is trained to fight forest fires.

The Westport Fire Department says Kronick has responded to several wildfires in the past, most recently in Canada in 2013.

Today, more than 13,000 residents in Northern California are being urged to evacuate their homes as the flames spread.

Officials say more than 97-square miles and two dozen homes have been destroyed by flames. They say the flames have grown at an incredible pace, destroying more than 30 miles of land in just five hours yesterday.
