Westport plastic bag ban closes in

WESTPORT - Stores in Westport are gearing up for the town?s plastic bag ban that goes into effect Thursday.

The ordinance will ban the usage of plastic bags for the retail checkout of purchased goods. Many are hopeful that recyclable bags will reduce garbage and be better for the environment.

?We got along without plastic bags before 20 years ago, so we can get along without them again,? said Carl Friedman.

The ordinance was approved at the Town of Westport Representative Town Meeting on Sept. 2, 2008.
