WESTPORT - Westport police are warning residents to tighten up security around their homes to avoid falling victim to burglaries.

Authorities say they've received similar reports of suspects knocking on doors to check if anyone is home in hopes that they'll have an opportunity to steal valuables. They say residents need to keep their doors locked and alarms set, if possible.

Police say that anyone who sees something suspicious should make a note and write down any unfamiliar license plates as a precaution. Residents should also inform their neighbors when they plan on going away and not let newspapers pile up in the driveway.

When using social networking sites, officials say to be discreet about travel plans, especially when going away for an extended period of time.
