Westport residents volunteer to help damaged church

WESTPORT - Westport residents are volunteering this evening to help a historic church recover from a massive fire over the weekend. Part of the Saugatuck Congregational Church went up in flames Sunday night, requiring the efforts of six fire departments. The fire started in the back of the building, destroying the fellowship hall and nursery school. Volunteers have since collected food and supplies, and local businesses have donated freezer space, especially since church officials were just days away from holding their annual Thanksgiving dinner. This year's event will be held down the street at the Christ and Holy Trinity Church. "It's very important that we support each other in times of stress," says Sue Ryan, a church administrator. As for the nursery school, church officials say they will determine a new site in the coming days. Vigil held outside burned Westport church
