WESTPORT - Westport police say a mother is facing charges after her children were found wandering along Post Road.

They say Natalie Bonny, 33, left her 1- and 5-year-olds home alone while she took the bus to go shopping last week.

Police say one child was found at Walgreens and the other by a Toyota dealership.

According to police, a woman driving down Post Road East found a boy wearing only pajamas and socks. He said his mother was at Walgreens, but when the woman brought the 5-year-old boy to the store they could not locate her.

Police say Bonny had told them her older son managed to unlock their door and go outside.

A group of people found the 1-year-old walking around McDonald's, also wearing pajamas and without shoes.

They say they brought the two children back home. Bonny was charged with risk of injury.

Officials say they are thankful the situation did not turn out worse.

"It's fortunate these were good people that in both circumstances found them, basically conducted their own little, brief investigations to get them home,” says Lt. David Farrell, of the Westport Police Department.

Police say the two children are safe and that the 5-year-old is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families, while his 1-year-old brother is with his father.

Bonny is being held under a $20,000 bond.
