Wet and snowy weather flooding basements

STRATFORD - After a winter filled with above-average snow accumulations, today's rain storm brought with it more risks of flooding for both local streets and basements.

According to Paul Plouffe, who runs a flood and fire-damage restoration business in Stratford, this year's wet and snowy winter has overwhelmed drainage systems and left southwestern Connecticut homeowners with flooded basements.

He advises homeowners to make sure their sump pumps are functioning properly in order to remove excess water. And if your basement does end up flooded, Plouffe says to use a dehumidifier and consult a professional to prevent mold growth.
