STRATFORD - Fire officials are investigating a blaze at the Robert Kennedy Apartments in Stratford that left one man dead.

The fire broke out inside the Birch Drive building just before 8 p.m. Saturday. Residents who live there say firefighters evacuated them, but the flames and smoke were too intense to rescue a man in his 50s who needed a wheelchair. Fire officials say the man, whose name has not been released, died inside his apartment.

Neighbors say the man was disabled and may have needed more care than he was getting.

There were no other injuries, officials say.
