FAIRFIELD - A historic Fairfield home was demolished today despite last-minute attempts to save the nearly 100-year-old house.

The house, located on Alvin Street, was once the home of Gustave Whitehead. Some aviation experts credit Whitehead as the first person to ever fly. The demolition began just minutes after supporters submitted a petition to Town Hall.

Supporters who wanted to see the house preserved say they would like to see new rules in place to save historic landmarks.

Whitehead supporters say if the house had been recognized as being 100 years old, it would have been protected under the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.
