A historic Fairfield home was demolished today despite last-minute attempts to save the nearly 100-year-old house.

The house, located on Alvin Street, was once the home of Gustave Whitehead. Some aviation experts credit Whitehead as the first person to ever fly. The demolition began just minutes after supporters submitted a petition to Town Hall.
