WILTON - Wilton police say a total of 19 checks have now been reported stolen from the mail.

The reports of stolen checks started coming in last month when people noticed their checks had been changed and deposited into different accounts.

Police say the checks were not all mailed on the same day and not all of the stolen checks have been cashed. The stolen checks reported so far total about $40,000.

The postal service says anyone who steals mail could face up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.
