WILTON - Wilton police are warning residents against taking calls from strangers after a 51-year-old resident was allegedly scammed out of nearly $50,000.

Lt. Donald Wakeman says the man was told he had won several million dollars and needed to pay some fees to receive his prize. He says the man wired money overseas over an eight-month period.

Wakeman says the best way to handle calls such as those is to simply say "I'm not interested" and hang up the phone.

Police say the scammer did send the resident about $1,700 at one point in an effort to retrieve more fees.
