Woman helps Norwalk food pantry make big transformation

NORWALK - It's a passion that Lyn Detroy turned into a career. The former nurse and board member at the Christian Community Action food pantry in Norwalk is the brainchild behind its recent transformation from a 500 square-foot room to a 5,000 square-foot facility.

Yesterday, about 200 volunteers from Pepperidge Farm helped set up the facility and today, the center opened its doors at its new location on South Main Street.

It currently serves around 1,500 people a month?nearly half of them children and senior citizens?which calculates to serving close to 300,000 meals a year.

Detroy estimates the new space will store enough food to triple that number.

She also hopes she can teach on-site nutrition classes and financial literacy to the underserved members of the community at the pantry.
