DARIEN - State and local leaders paid tribute to World War II veterans in Darien today during a special annual event commemorating the victory in Europe and Japan.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal presided over the Spirit of ’45 ceremony at Spring Grove Cemetery where he also laid a wreath as a symbolic tribute to those who died during the war.

“I think of every one of the lives lost marked by these headstones and how much they've given to keep us free and how much we owe them,” said Blumenthal.

The event was attended by WWII veterans including 92-year-old Lt. Cmdr. George Walsh, of the U.S. Navy.
