NORWALK - Police say they're on the hunt for two suspects in an attempted carjacking that landed the driver in the hospital with a gunshot wound in his face.

Investigators say two men jumped into Joseph Bateman's white Jeep Grand Cherokee in front of 51 Steven Street earlier today. One of the assailants shot Bateman in the face with a silver handgun before they both fled the scene, police say.

Local newspaper The Hour reports that Bateman is the same teen who was arrested on a weapons charge back in August. That charge stemmed from the murder of Amos Brown Jr., which Bateman witnessed, police say. Police have said they don't believe Bateman was involved in Brown's murder, and Brown's parents have said they believe gang members killed their son.

Today, officials at Norwalk Hospital say Bateman's injuries are not life-threatening.

Bateman's Jeep was taken in to be searched for evidence. Anyone with information is asked to call Norwalk police at 203-845-3000.
