One person was killed and several others were displaced when a fire broke out at a building in Jersey City, according to city officials.

The fire started just before 9 p.m. Tuesday on the fifth floor of 11 College Drive. Officials say that an “elderly” victim was found unconscious inside the building. This person was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead.

Officials say that five adults and two children were displaced. The American Red Cross came to the scene to provide a warming truck for the residents.

Mayor James Solomon and Acting Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose both responded to the scene.

“My heart and condolences go out to the family of the victim of tonight’s fire. No words can ease the pain of this loss, but I know that all of Jersey City grieves with them,” the mayor wrote in a statement.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s office is investigating.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
