A flight headed for Detroit had to return to Newark Liberty International Airport after the crew reported smoke onboard the plane.

Officials with the Port Authority of New York New Jersey and the Federal Aviation Administration say that Republic Airways Flight 3439 left Newark just before 4:30 p.m. but had to turn around a few minutes after 5 p.m. due to the smoke.

Officials say the passengers were deplaned and taken to Terminal C.

The FAA temporarily held flights for a time, but the airspace was reopened just before 6 p.m.

It was not clear what caused the smoke. No injuries were reported.
