Gunfire during a 50th birthday party over the weekend left a woman dead and a man in critical condition, police say.
Authorities identified the woman as Raenetta Catchings, 27. They did not immediately release the surviving victim's name.
Police say the two, who they believe to have been a couple, were outside arguing at 1584 North Ave. in Stratford early Sunday morning, when the shooting happened.
People at the house declined to comment.
No arrests have been made, but police say they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no continued threat to the public.
Neighbors say crime in the area is rare. There is a school on the street and many well-maintained homes.
"Fifty-five years I've been here, and we never had anything like this," one neighbor said.
Stratford police say this is the second homicide in town this year, but previously it had been about five years since a slaying there.
