Newtown police say one of its K-9s is recovering from emergency surgery.

Police say K-9 Aris was preparing for a training day when his stomach became twisted.

Newtown police said Aris’ handler, K-9 Officer Felicia Figol, quickly transported him to Newtown Veterinary Specialists, where Aris received emergency surgery for gastric dilation and volvulus.

They say it was a life-threatening condition.

Police credit those at Newtown Veterinary Specialists for saving Aris' life.

Officials say recovery is expected to be two weeks, then he can go back to patrol.
