Safety tips to follow in case of tornado warning
Parts of Litchfield and Fairfield counties were under a tornado warning Wednesday night, but there were no reports of any touching down in those areas.
According to the National Weather Service, tornadoes can occur at any time of the day or night and at any time of the year.
They says it's extremely important to check the forecast regularly, especially when an area is under a tornado watch or warning.
Here are some safety tips officials say are important to follow.
If a tornado is threatening your area, have a family plan in place, including a meeting spot such as a basement or central room on the lowest floor with no windows.
If you're in school, follow your tornado drill.
If you're outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building right away. Sheds are not safe.
If you're driving, head to the nearest shelter or burrow in a ditch. If those options aren't possible, duck in your car.
After a tornado strikes, the National Weather Service says it's important to stay informed. Keep on top of any weather alerts as there could be additional thunderstorms or tornadoes.
